Botzina is a communal ritual space for anti-Zionist and diasporist Jews living in Richmond, Virginia, and the surrounding areas – on the traditional lands of the Powhatan Chiefdom and the Monacan Nation. “Botzina” is Aramaic for “lantern” and since 5785 (2025), we have been attracting like-minded individuals to our flame, like moths.
We meet regularly for holiday celebrations, social gatherings, and learning opportunities. Our programming is member-led and member-driven, so new events and offerings are always in motion.
Botzina is both a founding minyan member of the Jewish Diaspora Movement and an affiliate havurah of the American Council for Judaism (ACJ), which aims to build a Judaism beyond nationalism.
As diasporist Jews, we believe doing what we can to aid Palestinians suffering under Zionist occupation, as well as supporting the indigenous peoples of Turtle Island on whose lands we now live, are both integral to our Judaism. We ask you to consider making a donation to Gaza Soup Kitchen or to the Indigenous Conservation Council of the Chesapeake Bay, if you’re able.
FAQ
What denomination of Judaism is Botzina affiliated with?
None! Botzina is a non-denominational community havurah that welcomes all. We have members from a range of backgrounds, including secular. Anyone who is looking for community, whether ritual, cultural, or spiritual, is welcome to consider joining.
Our Shabbat morning services, coming in Fall 2026, are being assembled by a committee to cater to a wide variety of observance levels and preferences.
Does Botzina do anti-Zionist organizing?
Botzina is not an organizing space. We are a communal and ritual refuge for local Jews who do not align with ethno-nationalism.
That being said, our members will often share events and opportunities to get involved with Palestinian solidarity work being hosted by other groups.
Does membership cost money?
No, Botzina is free to participate in and we intend to keep it this way.
Where do you meet?
We meet in a variety of spaces including members’ homes, public parks, and local cafes and restaurants. We are always on the hunt for good spaces to host community events – we welcome your suggestions.
